Gold Rush! In the beginning it was the dream of making it rich that brought folks to the ‘Gold’ rush town of Breckenridge just a short 9 miles up HWY 9 from Frisco Colorado. Not everyone was able to strike it rich back then and after a series of booms and bust Breckenridge was listed as a ghost town in the mid 1900’s!Today the ‘Gold’ is snow and today Breckenridge is World Class ski resort and town in Summit County, Colorado with some of its riches being mountain real estate like Frisco homes and other Colorado Real Estate such as Frisco condos and townhomes as well as the mountain real estate in Breckenridge. But, let’s not to forget the ski town and the white gold – snow, because that is was brings visitors and locals alike to experience the unique charm of Breckenridge Colorado.
Only 9 miles from the beginning of the Ten Mile Range at Frisco Colorado is Peak 10 and the last in the name sake for that mountain range sits Breckenridge Colorado, a genuine mining town populated with friendly mountain folks enjoying their piece of Summit County Colorado Real Estate and all the special amenities the area has to offer. Breckenridge offers world class skiing and winter activities in and around town as well as an astounding array of summer fun; such as the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, abundant shops, galleries and restaurants (including saloons). There is plenty to spice up your visit or one can simply enjoy Breckenridge from their Condo or Home in Summit County.
Besides shopping for spectacular mountain real estate in Breckenridge or down the road for a Frisco Home or a Dillon condo on the lake; Breckenridge Colorado offers many other fun activities in town as well as nearby in Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Keystone and Copper Mountain.
Breckenridge in Summit County wasn’t always a world class ski town in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. In fact, early on Breckenridge Colorado was a rough miner filled town with thoughts of striking it rich or enjoying the local establishments such as the Gold Pan Saloon (est. in 1859). Today rather than panning for gold most search for their special place like a Breckenridge home or a Frisco Condo or other Colorado Mountain Real Estate. Of course, they can still relax at historic locations, such as the Gold Pan, and enjoy libations!
Today one can ski, snowshoe or in the summer bike or even drive up Boreas Pass which is just above the town of Breckenridge. This pass and gentle grade road used to be the location of the South Park & Pacific Railroad Company that came over the pass and down into the town of Breckenridge. Visitors and locals enjoy this route today as, I am sure, they did in the late 1800’s – it is a very beautiful trip.
While today most of the fortunes sought after are either enjoyment or for those that timed it right Summit County Real Estate investments. Even though many did not make their fortunes mining gold one 13.5 pound nugget was discovered close to Breckenridge by local miners. That big nugget was named Tom’s Baby and is on display at the Colorado Museum of Natural History in Denver, Colorado.
Skiing arrived via Lumber Company from Kansas. The Rounds and Porter Lumber Company was issued a permit for new ski resort and opened Breckenridge on December 16, 1961. That first year, the Kansas based lumber company that started Breckenridge, had almost 17,000 skier visits!
Long before the mining boom and bust Breckenridge was a summer hunting ground for White River and Ute Native Americans. Yet, once I-70 was finished Summit County and Breckenridge were assured their success as a world class resort full of easily accessible activities, real estate and, of course, skiing.
